Catholic nerd pilgrimage: Queen of Apostles (the day after)

Closing in on the one-year mark (and thus the conclusion of this project), yesterday, I went to Mass at Queen of the Angels church which is part of the two-church parish, Queen of the Apostles. This Mass was their official celebration of the patronal feast (there was also a dinner at a nearby restaurant after Mass, which I skipped).

The Mass had modest attendance, which I guess was typical of a Saturday Mass, although other parishes I’ve visited have had higher Saturday Mass attendance than this. They used the readings for Ascension Thursday (which is now celebrated on Sunday in the US) which I suppose supersedes the propers for the feast, although I’ve been to other churches which did the readings for their patronal feast rather than the Sunday readings which are supposed to take precedence.

The front of the church, a neo-gothic building with a single central bell tower featuring a stone Celtic cross inlaid on a bank of stained glass over the doors. The view of the sanctuary from the back of the church. The interior is relentlessly rectangular with a vaulted ceiling raising to a peak with angels painted on the ceiling panels. The old altar stands against the back wall of the sanctuary, with a large crucifix and statues of the four evangelists One of the stations of the cross, a bas-relief engraving pained in gold against a light purple background. The station is “Jesus takes up his cross” but Jesus is standing before the cross with his arms raised while two anonymous figures actually lift the cross. It seems Jesus should be doing a bit more of the work here, I think.
