Today’s Saint Picture: Blessed Antonio Rosmini

Antonio Rosmini is a bit of an interesting figure—his writing was initially put on the index of prohibited books and yet he ultimately was not only removed from the index (although there was and is dispute over whether his removal meant that his writing was ok, or just not heretical enough to be on the list) but was ultimately declared venerable and beatified by Pope Benedict XVI (notable as Pope Benny had a reputation for being conservative and doctrinaire while Antonio was a pioneer of Catholic social justice and Liberal Catholicism (which doesn’t quite mean what contemporary readers would think it does, but also doesn’t quite mean what conservatives would like it to mean).

One of Antonio’s most notable works was Of the five wounds of the Catholic Church which accurately and perhaps a bit harshly condemned some of the institutional sins of the church of his time. Somewhat ironically, the order he founded, the Institute of Charity, went on to be guilty of the institutional sins of the twentieth and twenty-first century.

Mock wood engraving of Blessed Antonio Rosmini which kind of ended up looking more like Gomez Addams than Antonio Rosmini
