New poem in Hanging Loose: “Ekphrasis on a City Sidewalk”

This poem began life as the alt text on a picture I posted to Twitter back before Ekphrasis on a city sidewalk

D. A. Hosek

A portrait of good Pope John leans
upon a rusty bicycle beside a derelict typewriter,
three limp roses in a plastic grocery bag
and an open carton of cigarettes.

I’m just waiting for the bus,
the master of these things says to me when
I ask if I can take a picture
and I say, no you’re not,
you’re making art.
Twitter turned evil. After I wrote the alt text, I realized that the alt text applied to itself and not just the picture and with a bit of editing turned into the poem that was published in Hanging Loose

I had assumed that the poem was silently rejected since when I let them know that another poem from the packet was accepted elsewhere, they informed me that they don’t accept simultaneous submissions and thus I had broken the rules with my submission.

Six months later, my SASE from the submission showed up in my P. O. box and I went to pick it up so I could record the rejection. After all, good news never comes in a SASE.

Imagine my surprise when I opened it up with an acceptance for this poem along with a check for ten bucks.
