New poem: Chicago Sonnet #42

Photo of a Chicago newstand, albeit not the one that inspired the poemAnother poem from my Chicago Sonnets sequence is out in the debut issue of Big Score Lit. Despite being #42, it’s actually the first poem in the sequence and the one that inspired the project.

There used to be a newsstand near the Adams station of the “L” in the loop and I was always intrigued by its collection of pornographic magazines and wondered who the customers for this material would be in an age of easy access to porn through the internet. Realizing that the phrase, “the seller of pornography” was a quartet of iambs, I started writing the poem in my notebook not long after my return to Chicago in 2009. I was beginning to despair of it ever getting published when it got picked up by Big Score. You should buy a copy of the magazine so you can have this poem in your very own home. It won’t wash the dishes, but it also won’t leave more dirty dishes in the sink either.
