Catholic Nerd Pilgrimage: St Sylvester

An image of Sylvester the Cat from Looney Tunes. He is a semi-anthopomorphic black and white cat with a red nose, standing up with a raised paw agaisnt a red backgroundAs a person of a certain age, the name Sylvester brings up a particular cat and his catchphrase, “Thuffering thuccotash!” Needless to say, this is not the namesake of St Sylvester Church but rather the fourth-century Pope of that name (whose papacy was the ninth-longest recorded).

The church (part of a two-church parish) is located at the east end of Palmer Square. They win bonus welcoming points in that one of the parishioners approached me after the Mass to inform me that tomorrow’s Mass would be at 10a rather than 8.30a.

I apparently forgot to take a picture of the sanctuary of the church before Mass so I only have the exterior, one of the original confessionals and a pair of the sculptural stations of the cross.

The exterior of the church, brick and granite with a tall stained glass window over the entrance and a bell tower to the left of the main structure. Two of tHe sculpted stations of the cross depicting St Veronica’s encounter with Jesus and Jesus falling while carrying the cross. The stations are painted, but the paint has been flecking offAn original confessional. The priest woudl be seated in the center behind the red curtain and on either side are enclosed booths for the penitents to give their confession. It’s made of stained wood with yellow crosses on the doors to the booths.
