Today’s saint picture: Blessed Ulma family

Married saints are unfortunately rare in the Catholic church and married saints who actually had sex, let alone children, are even rarer, but the Ulma family form one of the rare correctives to this. Józef and his wife Wiktoria and their family hid Jews from the Holocaust in their home until they were all summarily executed by the Nazis on 24 March 1944. The entire family was beatified together.

Of course given a complicated subject (there are six children along with Józef and Wiktoria), I decided to try a new tool on my iPad, Procreate. Having layers was handy as I was able to add a guide for my faux woodcut experiment which I could then easily remove before creating the final artwork.Faux woodcut showing the Ulma family. Wiktoria is holding a child and visibly pregant. Józef is next to her with two children in front of him and a third to his left. In the foreground, the oldest daughter is bottlefeeding a small child.
