Writerly resolutions: October status

This is a truly lousy month for writing progress. Even though I took a few days to take a mini-writing retreat at a hotel an hour away, I got very little writing done.

A mostly flat line showing the pathetic progress on the novel although there are a couple of vertical lines lower on the graph showing where I worked on post-workshop revisions for chapter six My sole real accomplishment on the novel was doing some post-workshop revisions on chapter six (and workshopping chapter seven last night).

My editorial re-read on We, the Rescued has been pathetic. I’ve made it all the way to chapter three. Part of that is that I feel like I’m unsure what I want to get out of the re-read. Maybe I should just read straight through once and then go back at it with more of a critical eye and making notes in the manuscript on that second re-read.

Maybe a hundred words on the new short story. There at least I have a vague notion of where I’m going but I’m afraid of doing it badly.

One new poem written for the Chicago Sonnets sequence.

On the publications front, I had print publications in California QuarterlyBig Score Lit and The Santa Monica Review with the last one also getting featured online.

Some clarified goals for the last two months of the year:

  • Read through We, the Rescued at least once and get my editorial notes in place.
  • Finish two more chapters of the new novel.
  • Finish body of non-fiction project
  • Make some real progress on the entertainment.
  • Finish new story
  • At least four new poems
