Surprisingly, there is no Saint Justin church in the archdiocese of Chicago, so today doesn’t have an obligatory church visit (and yesterday’s visit covered my Sunday obligation so I’m good for the weekend).
St Justin, commonly known as St Justin Martyr, is so called because, not surprisingly, he was martyred for refusing to sacrifice to the pagan Gods after converting to Christianity. His conversion to Christianity, in turn came as a result of studying various philosophical systems and he found himself getting into Christianity by way of Platonism (which doesn’t really surprise me since there are a lot of things in Plato that seem to be echoed in the New Testament, particularly the letters of Paul).
The picture itself was done in crayon again, although this time I did a rough outline sketch in pencil before laying down the crayon which seemed to help a fair amount although I did end up giving Justin a distressingly long neck in this portrait.
