Today’s saint picture: Saint Heimerad

Looking over the options for saints for today (and discovering too late that it’s the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary), I stumbled upon Saint Heimerad who, despite his weird name has a kind of cool story, most notably with his nickname, “Fool for Christ.”

He apparently had difficulty with living in community, was expelled from his first abey over a dispute about his attire, was rejected from a second monastery and driven from several more places before finally his holiness was recognized and people began coming to the hermit for counsel and advice. Somewhat ironically for a guy who couldn’t get along with other people in community, an abbey was built around the church built over his grave.

I feel like the mock woodcut stuff is getting better. I’ve stopped cheating on faces and I seem to have something acceptable on that front, although hands are still a challenge to get right.

My mock-woodciut illustration of Saint Heimerad. He has dark curly hair and a beard, is holding a large cross and has his left arm extended in a gesture of welcome or blessing or who knows what—not much context in the statue I worked from.
