Catholic Nerd Pilgrimge: Nativity of the Lord (a bit late)

Driving east on 37th Street, I saw the bell tower of Nativity of Our Lord Parish looming over the houses and 2 and 3-flats that populate Bridgeport east of new Comiskey,¹ a strong reminder of the days when a home parish was a key marker of self-identity in Chicago. But only once I was inside the church did I realize that this was the home parish of the Mayors Daley.²

The exterior of Nativity of the Lord church lit at night for the 10p Christmas Eve serviceOne of the sculpted stations of the cross lining the church. Ever since I discovered how much the stations of the cross freak out non-Catholics, I’ve grown to really enjoy the more graphic versions of them. The interior of the church. It felt a lot larger than I expected it to be when I came in, probably ecause of the bright lighting. The arched roof is supprted by curved steel beamss and with spokes and crossbars. I feel like aesthetically it would have been better to have painted the beams in a contrasting color to empasize their presence rather than trying to hide them.

  1. I have a vague notion that it has some other name, but I refuse to learn it.
  2. The larger-than-life statue of St Patrick was the thing that made me realize where I was.
