Catholic nerd pilgrimage: Saint-Antoine de Padoue

Another Parisian parish for my project, it is, of course, on the opposite side of Paris from my hotel, but a relatively quick trip by Metro (my hot tip for travelers—don’t bother with surface transport in Paris. Metro is always faster, often by disconcerting amounts). In the morning, they had a lauds service before the Mass, and then the Mass itself, celebrated from the chapel altar, although the number of people present was such that it would have made more sense, i think, to have celebrated from the main altar. One thing I saw that really caught my attention was that when the baskets were passed for the collection, each basket had a touchscreen credit card reader for those parishioners who wanted to pay by credit card.

The front of the church looking up at the bell tower. The churhc was built in the 1930s when the Paris defensive wall was removed opening new terrain on the edge of Paris for development. The style of the church is kind of art deco with four statues of saints on the corners of the bell tower near its summitThe main altar as seen from the back of the church. The church has a vaulted roof and an impressive mural on the back wall of the sanctuary. The altar in the Saint Anthony chapel, with the statue of the Saint at the side of the chapel sanctuary.
