Catholic Nerd Pilgrimage: Old St Mary‘s

Old St Mary’s has the newest church building I’ve seen so far (I’m pretty sure it’s the newest church building in the city and quite possibly the whole archdiocese, which is ironic given its name) although the parish is also simultaneously the oldest parish in the city. Of the new church buildings I’ve seen I’m torn between this one and St Anne in Barrington for which is the most beautiful church. I think maybe this one although St Anne is rather daring in its design. The exterior of the church, a daring contemporary structure with a lot of oblique anglesA plaque outside the church reading: OLD ST. CHICAGO'S FIRST AND OLDEST PARISHThe view of the sanctuary of the church. The congregation is arrayed in a semi-circle around the sanctuary, but what makes the church so daring is that the architect eschewed the temptation for symmetry for daring angles in the roof and walls of the buildingBecause I’ve been doing shots of stations of the cross, this is a shot of station X: Jesus is stripped of his garments. I’m not sure, but I think this is a relatively contemporary work and appears to be a bronze cast of a clay sculpture.
