Today, being the feast of Saint Maria Goretti, I trekked to the parish of Holy Virgin Martyrs formed by the merger of the legacy parishes of Saint Maria Goretti and Saint Beatrice. The parish uses the former Saint Beatrice church for worship under the combined patronage of both saints.
The Mass was generally fine, with the priest even making mention of Saint Maria Goretti in his homily. Music was provided by a choir accompanied by a pianist and two guitar players. I couldn’t hear the guitar players at all which my kids assured me was a defect of my hearing aids and not the church’s sound system. We left immediately after communion since this time I checked the hymns on the hymn board and saw that they were planning a patriotic song for the closing hymn, which wasn’t surprising, given that the bouquets of flowers around the altar included little American flags. I have to remember to choose Spanish Masses around the Fourth of July.
