Today’s (less) crummy saint picture, Saint Charles Lwanga

At least in part because Christianity has been centered on Europe for the largest part of its history, the canonized saints tend to be white Europeans, so it was a bit of a delight as I looked through my resources for today to discover a saint who isn’t white, Charles Lwanga. A convert to Catholicism in the 19th century, during a time when the king of the Baganda people was already persecuting Christian converts fearing a loss of his power. Lwanga’s baptism took place on the same day that his predecessor as chief page in the court of King Mwanga was beheaded for reproaching the king for killing Christian missionaries. Less than a year later, Lwanga was burned to death for refusing to renounce his Christian faith.

I’m still doing crayon drawings with a pencil pre-sketch. The pencil is visible in the picture here.Crayon drawing of Charles Lwanga. Lwanga is wearing a red tribal robe and holding a cross in his right hand. A golden halo is behind his head.
