Since there’s no church for me to visit for any of today’s saints, I decided I’d do the art thing and draw one of the saints. Looking through my Penguin Dictionary of the Saints, I found Saint Desiderius of Vienne who had a really rough time of things: he was rebuked by the pope for teaching grammar and then banished from his diocese when he was accused of having an improper relationship with a woman, allegedly a trumped-up charge on the part of King Thierry II of Burgundy. Upon his return, he criticized Thierry for lax morality and was sentenced to imprisonment by the king and then executed by the soldiers who were transporting him to prison.
